Ready to read a good book?

We have just added Original Short Stories (180 of them!) and Selected Writings (more short stories!) by Guy de Maupassant. For the child in all of us there is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. We have also recently added Jude the Obscure and The Withered Arm by Thomas Hardy, Metaphysics by Aristotle, Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility and Anthony Trollope's The Warden. In addition to the Chinese classic Tao Te Ching by Lao Tse, we have added the Analects by Confucius.

We are especially thankful for the assistance in this project given by Tara and Richard Jernigan. Tara has contributed two of her favorite books, Desperate Remedies by Thomas Hardy and Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. You can check out some of the games, tools, source code and other software developed by Richard at Random Software.

The Classical Library is devoted to presenting new HTML versions of classical literature based on electronic texts from sources such as Project Gutenberg and other works in the public domain that are newly scanned and converted.

What is classical literature? Of necessity, works featured on this site must be in the public domain. So for our purposes, a work that has played a part in western culture and has remained in public esteem for enough years to be no longer copyrighted is eligible for inclusion.

We hope that lovers of good books and those who are encountering the classics for the first time will enjoy and benefit from this project.
